Suso Vaamonde

Suso Vaamonde Manteiga has a degree in Classical Philology from the University of Santiago de Compostela and holds a professional bagpipe degree from the Mayeusis Conservatory in Vigo. He is the director, coordinator and teacher of the Suso Vaamonde Galician Popular Instruments School in Caldas de Reis and also of the Permanent Traditional Music Classroom on the Pontevedra campus of the University of Vigo. He is also a teacher of folk instruments at the Outes Town Council School of Music and Traditional Dance, at the A Fuliada association in Betanzos, at the Gaïa music school in Pontevedra and at the Hai que Roelo association in Cuntis. He also teaches online classes in Galician popular instruments.

He has performed with such prestigious groups as Xacarandaina, Leliadoura, Luvas Verdes, Cantata Vernácula, the Galician Ballet Rey de Viana, the Vaamonde, Lamas & Romero trio, and the historical choir Aires da Terra: o Legado de Feijóo, among others.

On August 2, 2005, he was the only bagpiper in charge of interpreting the Marcha do antigo reino de Galicia at the inauguration of the president of the Xunta de Galicia, Emilio Pérez Touriño.

Suso is the author of more than forty works and as many arrangements, and is the author of several publications in the field of Galician bagpipes: Solo de gaita, Cadernos de gaita galega (vols. 1, 3, 12 and 9), Doce polainas enteiras, De pano sedán, Revista Galega de Etnomusicoloxía, Pel e madeira (vols. 1 and 2).
